PHD Educational Administration, Kuwait

I am a 34-year-old Muslim Arab woman from Kuwait. Education is my life, and I thrive on progress, especially through enhanced creativity in educational technology. I want very much to earn my PHD in my field in the West, as I am convinced that this would provide me with the best preparation for making the greatest contribution possible to curriculum development and educational administration in my native Kuwait.

I was born into a Kuwaiti family that has always placed a very high value on education, for many generations. My elder sister is a math teacher and she likes her job very much. She was the one who helped inspire me to choose teaching as a profession. I want very much to follow the family tradition and to excel in my chosen area, educational administration. I hope to return to Kuwait after graduation and to do all that I can to make Kuwaiti educational standards competitive on an international level. In many important ways, we even lag behind some of our Arab neighbors.

The greatest contribution that I might be able to make to society would be to turn schools into centers of creativity. The best way to do this, I think, is to become the very best researcher that I can; and to publish my findings about educational leadership, how forming leaders in education for tomorrow might well be the best way to go about addressing the many challenges faced by our educational systems in Kuwait.

I have a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Kuwait University (2007) and my studies to this point have left me with a most keen desire to engage in intensive research in the areas of total quality assurance in education. In addition to being a professional teacher for many years, I have also taught EFL classes as a volunteer, something which has helped me to much better understand and appreciate the importance of multiculturalism in the EFL classroom. I have been a teacher for the past 12 years; serving the last four years as a Senior Teacher leading groups of teachers. My greatest curiosity and joy, however, I find in research for publication and I have already published the a research project “Futuristic Vision for Privatizing Secondary  Education in Kuwait” published in “ Journal of Social Science” 2008.

My attendance at a conference in Bahrain, in April of 2005, was a watershed moment in my life that opened up my eyes to many new issues and opportunities in my field.  I attended a lot of work shops about e- learning and its use in education and I learned a great deal about the importance of e-learning, its principal definitions, methods, and areas of exciting growth and potential. Perhaps what I most enjoyed was learning on a theoretical level through the concrete real world experiences and challenges of the other conference participants who came from many different countries, including some from outside of the Middle East. This experience left me with the dream of completing my education in a program such as yours that is even more multicultural, with all areas of the world represented on the student body.

I look forward to thinking of myself in graduate school as a representative from Kuwait to a UN type body of educational administration specialists in training from all over the world. I am convinced that coming to better understand ESL/EFL issues from a variety of comparative contexts will help me to put our own EFL challenges in Kuwait into a more rigorous perspective.

I have remained very active in the e- learning community at Kuwait University over the course of the last few years, since my time there as a graduate student in the program. Just as we did prior to graduation, collaborating on ideas on projects, we have continued to do so until the present. I have visited several other Gulf countries and as a result of my private study, I have a nascent understanding of comparative educational systems and challenges among Gulf States. Most of the valuable things that I have learned, however, I have learned in the classroom, especially my volunteer activity from 1999- 2008 serving as an EFL teacher in a secondary school for grades 10-11-12. I find my greatest delight helping students at always go that extra mile to maintain a good relationship with all of them, despite the profound difficulties that many of them have with English.

I have also continued to take courses in areas that will help me to be a more creative professional in EFL instruction, mainly having to do with CALL techniques and resources. I enjoyed a course in 2009 called “Teaching Speaking” in 2009 and another course that same year in educational games. Last year, 2010, I studied technology in education; all of these courses were sponsored by Kuwait’s Ministry of Education.

I have faced many obstacles along the way since I have had many responsibilities, including family responsibilities that were quite time consuming. I am now at an excellent place in my life, however, to devote myself fully to my graduate studies. I have made progress at developing my time management skills and I look forward to continuing to do so in your program, especially since I will be working through some culture shock issues upon arrival. If admitted to your program, I hope to come early so as to get settled in before beginning my studies.

My greatest joy in life is discovering information and putting it to work. I am deeply engaged with user-generated content on the Internet and look forward to using this resource to the fullest extent possible throughout our educational systems in the years to come. I look forward to living through new eras of development where educational instruction takes place in real time, in an interactive nature, the technology of which will be indebted to the gaming industry.

Kuwait has resources to invest in its future and being accepted to your program will provide me with the necessary professional springboard to be able to make many creative contributions to the education of future generations of my countrymen. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your consideration of my application to your program.
