PHD Business Administration, European

I hope to study for the Ph.D. in Business Administration at XXXX University. I look forward to contributing in creative ways to the diversity of your academic community. I was born and raised in Athens, Greece, but I am well read and well traveled and consider myself a global citizen.

I look forward to a long career in business research with an international focus. XXXX University is my first choice for graduate study for several reasons, especially the research interests of the faculty and the highly multinational character and direction of the program.

My professional experience is the greatest strength I can offer to the program. I am especially inspired by the prospect of a career in academia. I want to pursue graduate work with an area of specialization in Strategic Management. My long-term goal is to become a university professor or a manager in a large organization.

The single most important educational experience I have had was participating from 1994 through 1996 in a unique program of the Greek Parliament for students of Political Science and Public Administration. I have an M.S. Degree in Applied Economics and Finance from XXXX University of Economics and Business and dual BS degrees in Law and Political Science and Public Administration, both from the XXXX University in Athens. At the center of my research interests for graduate school is the way that, by adopting sustainable practices, companies can gain a competitive edge and increase their market share. In this general context, I am exceptionally fascinated with the growing demand for 'green' products and the significant new markets in which sharp-eyed eco-entrepreneurs are poised to reap the rewards.

I am interested in the strategies and tools companies can draw on to turn the principle of sustainability into practical, effective solutions. I also look forward to studying the origin or generation of new firms, innovation, and performance. I am particularly concerned that many new firms die within a few years of their creation. Thus I could easily envision myself writing a doctoral dissertation in the future on the performance of new "green" firms, focusing on their strategies for innovation and the commercialization of their ideas.

I look forward to studying the conditions that generate new business opportunities and favor entrepreneurial activity across industrial sectors. I am drawn to the technological regime as an aid to the interpretation of different patterns of innovation and the nature of opportunities that present themselves to entrepreneurs.

Recently, I have been interested in how attention has shifted in the entrepreneurship literature, from identifying traits that tend to lead to success to an understanding of the processes through which individuals identify and exploit opportunities. I am fascinated by the concept of strategic choices in the overall context of entrepreneurial strategies.

From December 2002 until the present, I have worked as a Senior Credit Officer with a major company in Athens. I review credit applications and make decisions concerning the granting of credit to our clients. My duties include presenting credit reports to the Board of Directors.

Before this position, I worked as a trainee Legal Advisor for over a year and a half. My duties included drawing up contracts and agreements, consultations, and developing company plans and reports on company decisions and options. From 1996 through 2001, I worked with a company in the department of customer credit control, order management, and dispatching. I take great pride in my organizational skills and my capacity to assure quality, speed, and accuracy in performing a broad diversity of tasks in a complex, multinational environment. Of singular importance is my identity as, first and foremost, a team player who constantly struggles to coordinate with the other members of my team. I have demonstrated my ability to produce high-quality output, often within short deadlines. Along with highly refined communication skills, I have a strong sense of initiative and intellectual curiosity, and I can adapt quickly and flexibly to new demands.

I know most of Europe fairly well, having traveled in several countries, and I now seek the privilege of living in what I see as the most progressive area of the United States, the Bay Area. I consider myself a diverse, well-rounded individual with much to contribute to the academic community. I have completed Military service with the Hellenic Army as a Military Police Sergeant (1999-2000), and I am a Member of the Board of Employees (at my current job), as well as the Athens Bar Association. Over the past six years, I have attended various seminars and conferences in the areas of Banking, Consumer Credit, Public Administration, Competition Policy and Sectoral Regulation, and Social Organization and Responsibility. For hobbies, I am an avid skier and soccer player. I love the Cinema, Theatre, and a good book. I think it is of central importance in life to satisfy one's vision and maintain a creative yet stable personal life.

Last but not least, as a member of the Board of Employees, I can express my passion concerning issues such as poverty, equality, and especially equal opportunities in the working environment and environmental problems. Through my training in law, I have had the chance to become familiar with business legislation. This helps me to understand better how companies are organized and how they work from a legal point of view. I want to thank you for your consideration of my application.
