MS Degree, Biology, Forest Ranger

For the past six years, I have maintained a conceptual continuity in my academic and professional careers. Indeed, I have committed myself to aiding the community both as a lifeguard and paramedic, and in my education to the sciences, particularly Biology. While I have enjoyed the challenges and intrinsic rewards of my jobs, I have always felt that something was missing, a certain spark to ignite my passion for the outdoors. I yearn to bring my love of the land to others, to work to preserve its beauty so that others may take away a greater appreciation for our beloved land.

Having lived and grown up in XXX, I have been immersed in some of the most beautiful land in America. Shenandoah National Park, George Washington and Monongahela National Forests all within a few miles of my home, enveloped by the Blue Ridge and Massanutten Mountains. These places have been literally in my backyard for my entire life, my playground, refuge and place for contemplation.

I have reached a point in my academics where I am eager to engage in research in stream water in the Shenandoah River as well as the forest restoration ecology project. I also want to explore the possibility of research areas of Infectious diseases in wildlife as well as influences on patterns of forest regeneration. XXX is my sole choice for further education and XXX's Biology program has struck me as well staffed, with small classes, giving ample opportunity for research into ecology and environmental issues and effective contact with professors. Additionally, access to ongoing faculty research and labs, plus seminars of cutting-edge research and theory is excellent. This sort of exposure and hands-on research is exactly what I need to be effective in my career, and will make my transition to professional work fluid.

I would like to take this opportunity to express that my current XXX is not an accurate reflection of the seriousness with which I am now approaching my academic career. In truth, I feel that this past year has seen a great deal of my personal growth and maturity as a student and budding scientist.

Through an academic relationship with XXX's Department of Biology, and a graduate degree in Biology, I will be fully equipped to bring my goals my dreams - of either teaching Biology at a community college or as a Park or Forest Ranger to fruition. More than this, I have been impressed by the work of my Biology instructor, my role model, and am eager to follow a similar path. At this time, though, I have not ruled out the possibility of research work that provides checks and balances for an organization's environmental impact.

Biology is completely intertwined with who I am, and where I want to go in life. No other field has nor ever could bring me the same level of personal or professional satisfaction and will be the vehicle by which I contribute to society and the future of our fragile ecosystems our trust as the caretakers of the earth.
